    Default Iraqi soldier in MARPAT

I just found this quite interesting.........

Spc. Gene R Bachman, from the 36th Infantry Division, attached to the 1st Marine Division, and an Iraqi soldier patrol the city of Hit. This photo appeared on www.army.mil

Maybe the caption didn't explain everything: that guy could be a interpretor or something.

In a few cases I've seen from the Balkans, Finnish KFOR troops gave this local dude who was working for them as an interpretor a uniform identifying him as Finnish KFOR: perhaps this guy's got a similar situation or something.

This is just a guess, though.

Yeah, you guys are probably right. I just found it interesting that he was wearing MARPAT. I think this is the first time I've seen an Iraqi outfitted in it.

    Yeah, quite interesting. Thanks!

    Short question:

Why iraqi forces got the 'old' us battle dress uniforms?

My guess is cos the "new" ones are for US forces? Prohibitive price tag too?

I guess the new "post-Saddam" Iraqi military needed a new face: thus they were issued new uniforms.

I'm not sure if the new Iraqi 6-color desert is completely identical to the older US 6-colored one, though:

    US 6-color desert

    Iraqi 6-color desert

You can clearly see that the Iraqi one has some sort of pinkish tan color on it and thus making it slightly different from the American model. Oh, and the Iraqi model has epaulettes too.

It's very common actually. You have the interpreter wearing the same uniform, so a sniper won't pick him out as easily. It's also better when the shooting starts; you know that the guy is one of yours so friendly fire won't happen as quickly as when he would be wearing a different uniform (he would be the only one with a different uniform, which is allways a bad thing).

I haven't seen interpreters wearing ACU, but I'm sure they also give them ACU when attached to an army unit.

I have to agree with you with that but on the pic, his helmet will betray him.

Iraqi interpreters wear also polish uniforms while working with the polish forces (check the unarmed tanned guys):

Wow... Polish -> Arabic. That's specialised. Bet they get paid quite a bit, which they entirely deserve.

My question is why not give interpeters arms, they go into harms way just like soldiers. Its not like the interpeters arent trusted or are they not trusted with weapons.
