Alright lads,Scanning around Google Earth and saw this.odd that so much traffic would have stopped in the middle of a major highway.I followed the road on and did not find more than 3 cars at a time next to eachother so something serious was happening here.Any ideas or am I just being a nit-picker???This is slightly west of the pin for Bagdad,I can give pointers if anyone is arsed looking at the surrounding area!
Thanks for looking!

Someone forgot their wife at home?
Seeing that there are at least two cars in front of the jam that are standing at an angle to the road direction, I think the most obvious possibility is a simple traffic jam after an accident
If it were because of a roadside bomb there would PROBABLY either be some blast marks and/or the following cars would not standd patiently in line... they would simply turn around or drive another way in a hurry to get away. Anything else is just speculation...
These highway, as most Iraqi ones was built by Polish wokers in the 70ties and 80ties. I wish we had such highways in Poland![]()
Iraqis are shyte drivers.
As s Google Earth novice can you tell the date of the imagery that you are looking at? Looking at parts of Iraq I'm intimately familiar with I sure don't see the places I was stationed at. Leads me to believe some of this stuff is pre-war imagery.
well u see... i heard from a friend that a camel was trying to cross the road, however .
from what i understand quite a bit of the images from Google Earth are indeed years-old.Originally Posted by Deuterium
Not easily. You can switch on the DG Coverage options in Layers which shows grids detailing the area imaged, date taken, cloud cover and resolution quality. If there's just 1 or 2 images taken of an area you can sometimes check the quality and cloud cover and work out when it was taken.Originally Posted by Deuterium
The trouble with areas like Baghdad (and Iraq in general) is it's one of the most heavily mapped areas and covered in images from 2002 - 2005 and all spliced together. It's usually impossible to work out exactly when you're looking at.
hmm did you find some us forces on google earth?
...like squad of abrams in desert or something?
Good guess would be because of an IED..been involved in that enough..just a guess..
Check out the Green Zone. Although I would judge the image to be around 5 meter you can see military vehicles, just can't make out the type really well. You can see the serpentine and Texas/Alaska barriers as well. Switch over to BIAP however and it's definitely pre-war imagery. Follow Irish from the Green Zone and you can just see the start of the line of traffic and then it switches over to the old imagery and the cars magically go away.Originally Posted by HorrigEn
