Default Eyewitness - Germans Tested A-Bomb In October, 1944

A book by Luigi Romersa, an 88-year-old former Italian war correspondent for Corriere della Sera, is expected to spark controversy over how close the Nazis came to producing a nuclear device towards the end of World War II.

According to think tanks, the Nazis developed nukes and missiles but the technology could not be delivered in the battlefield due to lack of time and resources.

Romersa says he’s the last living witness to the experimental detonation of a rudimentary weapon on an island in the Baltic in 1944.

Romersa said Benito Mussolini wanted him to know more of weapons capable of reversing the course of the war, so he sent him to Germany and he met Hitler in a bunker in Rustenburg, where he was given a tour around the Nazis'' secret weapons plant at Peenemunde, on the Baltic coast.

Romersa said he saw weapons "streets ahead of any conventional weapons the allies had at the time". "They were developing a missile which they said they intended to launch from Europe across the Atlantic to bomb America."

"Hitler and Nazi Germany had a very, very developed weapons programme and were certainly capable of creating an atomic bomb," he said.

In October 1944, Romersa said, he was taken to the island of Rugen, where he watched the detonation of a "disintegration bomb".

"They took me to a concrete bunker with an aperture of exceptionally thick glass. There was a slight tremor in the bunker; a sudden, blinding flash, and then a thick cloud of smoke. It took the shape of a column and then that of a big flower.

"The officials there told me we had to remain in the bunker for several hours because of the effects of the bomb. When we eventually left, they made us put on a sort of coat and trousers which seemed to me to be made of asbestos and we went to the scene of the explosion.

"The effects were tragic. The trees around had been turned to carbon. No leaves. Nothing alive. There were some animals - sheep - in the area and they too had been burnt to cinders."

Hitler's nuclear program aroused dispute in recent months, particularly in Germany, when Rainer Karlsch, an independent historian, published a study that includes evidence that the Nazis developed nuclear weapons.

Romersa said that when he wrote of his experiences after the war, "everyone said I was mad". At that time it was universally accepted that Nazis’ Germany was years away from testing a nuclear device.

However, Russian archives state that a German scientists lodged a patent claim for a plutonium bomb as early as 1941

That wouldn't have been good ...

BTW wasn't W. von Braun doing the US missile program (NASA) ?

There were teams of men who went along the the Allied front line troops just looking for any Atomic bomb material and information. They found very little and I am sure that had this happen they would have found it. There were plenty of German scientist looking for an improved billet when the war ended who would have spilled the beans for a job with Allies.

now think what if the germans could finish theyr project and fire a nuke to London or Moscow, my quess is that they could have won the war.

    V-3?

The terrible novelty of V-2 had by no means worn off yet, but London last week was already abuzz with speculation about V-3—supposedly an atomic bomb. Allied bombers renewed their attentions to Rjukan, Norway, the site of a heavy-water plant which the Nazis have recently rebuilt after its destruction by the R.A.F. and Norwegian patriots last year. Meanwhile, British censors passed a London dispatch giving the most circumstantial account to date of atomic bomb possibilities.

According to this account, the Nazis may have discovered an entirely new approach to atomic explosives. Before wartime censorship blacked out all talk of atomic experiments, it was known that most scientists put their atom-smashing hopes mainly in cyclotronic bombardment of atoms with deuterons—the heavy hydrogen nuclei derived from heavy water. Individual atoms have been smashed, but in a bomb atoms must explode in quantity, each disintegrating atom setting off others. The new Nazi experiments are said to be along lines suggested by the composition of the "White Dwarf," companion of Sirius, which is the densest known star.

The White Dwarf is so dense (specific gravity: 61,000) that a cubic inch of its substance weighs about one ton. Physicists believe that ordinary atoms could not be compressed to such density, and they suppose that the tremendous pressures and high temperature of the White Dwarf have broken up its atoms, letting their space-hungry electrons escape and leaving only the much more compact atomic nuclei.

The speculative London report suggested that the Nazis are using the same pressure principle to crush atoms. The crusher: A "Neuman" demolition charge, which explodes inward instead of outward. Used in a sphere, the Neuman charge might develop pressures of tens of thousands of tons per square inch at the center, perhaps enough to disintegrate an unstable atom such as uranium and release its explosive atomic energy. British scientists believe that such an explosion, though not far-reaching in area, would develop unheard-of violence at the point of impact.

What Is V2? Last week V-2 was still almost as great a mystery as V-3. If the British had recovered any duds for examination, they were keeping mum about it. Some Hollanders claimed they had seen V-2 launched from bare ground; others, from 80-ft. concrete pits. Some experts thought it could have been launched from barges off the Dutch coast. V-2 was variously reported to be guided by radio, by gyro compass, by fins, by spinning. But on one thing experts agreed: V-2 is a self-contained rocket, carrying its own oxygen and traveling at such speed (1,000 to 3,500 m.p.h.) that ordinary antiaircraft defenses are useless against it.

The consensus: V-2 is probably propelled by alcohol or gasoline and liquid oxygen. It has a warhead with about a ton of explosive, a supply of compressed gas (perhaps nitrogen) to force the fuel into the combustion chamber, and fins to keep it on a set course. It is believed to carry at least seven times the weight of its explosive in fuel. It probably has a series of jets, operated in succession to keep the rocket going on its long course (and perhaps helpful also in steering). One plausible reconstruction, by Martial & Scull, Manhattan industrial designers, indicated a steering mechanism in the tail. It seems unlikely that V-2 is steered by radio, since V-111s not and, at the heights to which V-2 climbs (60 miles or more), accurate observation to correct its deviations from the set course would be difficult. With a trajectory like that of a long-range shell, dropping sharply from its peak height, V-2 is probably launched at about a 30° angle from the ground for its 250-300 mile flight.

Glimpses of the Moon. Last week Britain's famed jack-of-all-sciences, J. B. S. Haldane, philosophically predicted a big postwar future for V2, which he thought could rise to 200 miles if fired vertically. Mused Haldane: "it could take photographs . . . [of] the sun and perhaps other heavenly bodies. . . . For the cost of a day of war, it should be practicable to send a series of rockets round the moon and photograph its far side."

    HITLER'S BOMB
The development of the German atomic bomb

    Documentary (c)Detmold, Germany 2005

    Author and director Heiko Petermann
    Camera Axel Fischer (BVK)
Production Media House 4, History Channel, FR 2

German scientist developed and tested successfully nuclear weapons at the end of WW 2. It was not a kind of Hiroshima bomb but a tactical nuclear weapon, a technical development way ahead of its time. The "Wunderwaffe" was not the imagination of a mad dictator but was real. It could have become a "bloody" reality if a small group of people did not stop the use of it!

The film will unveil through witnesses, evidences and scientific proves the existence of a Nuclear Program, the production and the tests of a German atomic bomb. We will show the key persons involved in it the scientists, the military and the political responsible people. For the first time we will learn why this has been kept secret, denied and forgotten. This documentary will not only rewrite the German history!

In an exciting investigative way, we will trace, the secret of the development of the German bomb. The spectator will be taken on a historical journey. He will visit the places where those dramatic developments took place. He will learn about the technical developments, experience the military actions, betrayal, scientific successes and the plans to use it against London, New York and Russia.

On one side the Nazis and scientists, on the other side the survivors of the concentration camps. Those who believed in the final victory and those who betrayed the faith in the thousand-year old realm. On one side rains chaos while others are still pursuing their quest – A perfect story -.

The film will be a sensational, time-historical documentary, an adventure and report of facts, which will keep the historians and the politicians busy for years to come.

Parallel to the documentary a scientific history book, published by a respected publishing house will be brought on the market.

Yeah there was this speculation about a German nuclear programe a few years back.

The claims where as follows: the two nuclear bombs thrown on Japan were actually conquered German bombs (even more: that actually THREE bombs of which one failed to explode; allgedly the Japanese later gave this third bomb to the Russians. This was proven (or "proven") with a lot of indirect circumstantial evidence, like reports from the Manhattan project in early 1945 that showed that the scientists who had written them were doubting wether a nuclear bomb would be do-able at all and even that it would still take more than a year, that these concerns allegedly vanished exactly at the time when Germany capitulated, an alleged comment of another American Manhattan scientists that the contents of an German sub (which was about to transport something super secret to Japan) would have "saved them", the alleged eyewitness report by this Italian above about an alleged test of a "nuclear device" on some baltic island, countless media reports in the American and British press about German atomic bombs/programmes in the years just after 45, alleged comments from a British general who said that the Germans would have been working on something "incredible" that if successful would have won them the war, things like Stalin pulling of maneuvers like the Berlin crisis without any fear of American nuclear bombs (because the Americans would have still been busy building their own bombs and he knew it), the odd long timespan between Hiroshima/Nagasaki and the ****** Atoll tests (allegedly the first REAL American nuclear bombs) and so forth...

All mighty interesting, that's for sure. And of course Para's counter argument alone might not be enough to counter it, because, IF that would be the truth, any secured German nuclear bomb would have been above top secret back then. Also, and that is the real interesting thing to speculate about, IF the nuclear bombs on Japan would have been German bombs...would the power that be in America really have made the public privy to THAT truth? Let's say in 1970? It would not be about the nuclear weapon itself anymore, that's for sure. But still, what would the reaction be in America and the world if that would came out? Wouldn't it be devastating for Americas credibility? What about today? No, this would indeed be a secret worth keeping it forever. (Imagine: you would be American President and some of you chief spooks would say: "Well, there is something...a secret sort of. The bombs on Japan weren't ours. But no one can proof that unless we publish certain documents...we just need you presidential order to keep them under wraps for another decade. Sign this please..." What would you say? )

But is it the truth? Well, as said, sounds interesting, but that goes for von Däniken's ideas as well. This theory is backed up by lots of circumstantial evidence and it seems to fit into the historic picture. But then any decent conspiracy theory does that. Thing is, there is no undeniable proof (there is of course but only in some safe hidden in some military base, the guys who say that the Moonlanding was rigged claim the same).
So let's just say, as interesting as it is to speculate about it, I hesitate to join the movement.

But it would make a great story for another Hollywood movie featuring smart American operatives saving the world once more from Nazi evil...that's for sure. :P

And there I was thinking that German nuke tech was **** over tit at the time. Yes, they knew the basic theory but sort of back to front.

Ehem LazyLob...at least as far as phyics was concerned, it is aknowledged that Germany was the wolrd's leader in the first third of the century. Most Nobel prizes went to Germany, Quantum Mechanics was mostly a German invention, many terms used in modern physics (including Nuclear Physics...like "Bremsstrahlung") are still German to this very day.
This is the reason why the American government regarded a secret German nuclear program that could be well ahead of every other in the world as an absolute possiblity. And there were lots of European emigrants, even from Germany, who worked for the Manhattan project. Like Bethe, the head of the mathematics department.
Of course Bethe was a Jew, like Einstein. It's well known that Jews who were born and raised in Germany/Austria and speak German as motherlanguage have a natural disposition to become brilliant physicists...or shrinks.

You forgot Max Planck, the "father" of Quantum Physics.

At least he stayed in Germany during Hitler's rule, becaus he considered himself a German.

    Not this again.

It just didnt happen, maybe the germans built a massive dirty bomb but a true nuclear explosion was just beyond the abilities of the third reich.

In Albert Speers book, he devotes several pages to the atomic question and totally confirms it was economically impossible to carry out within the timeframe of the war.

The V3 was a long barrelled gun built into a hill in France, There were a number of charges to propel the shell built into the barrel and that there would not be one big explosion to propel the shell but a number of small ones. The range was such it could reach London, the gun was destroyed on the orders of Churchill as soon as it was captured. The big problem would have been the V4 which would have been launched on a V2. This was a glide bomb and would have been aimed at America. When it was released at high altitude by the V2 it would have started to glide down wards and when reached a certain height a rocket motor would have kicked giving it extra height, by repeating this they reckoned that they could hit America
