hello my fellow Belgians

for starters, I WAS indeed registered on a Belgian military forum (the paratroopers to be more precisely) because I intended to join the army and wanted to know a bit more.
Why I am banned from that forum? That's a long story. It has something to do with an old friend of mine who hacked my computer a while ago and pretended to be me. So he insulted people and spouted complete nonsense. And I only realized it when he began to insult my friends! I do not spend most of my days on the internet all the time so it took me a while to realize what he's been doing.

I don't care much whether you believe me or not. On the internet people can claim whoever they want to be. Personally I prefer an up close and personal approach to know people. Not through the internet. You can't know a person through the internet, in my opinion.

Bloody hell, for a minute I thought the title was "Belgian military threat". You got me worried, man, I was already looking for proof I had bought lots of Leonidas and Jeff de Bruges chocolate. Whew !

Threat? THe Belgian army is getting smaller and smaller and we have nowadays only a supporting role in foreign operations becaus of our politicians. You won't see the Belgian army going to battle for the next few years. Thanks to our "wonderful" minister of defence Flahaut.
btw it is meant cynically. He is a very bad politican and probably worse as a defence minister.

Sorry if this is deemed too off-topic, but I often see Blackhawks flying around Woluwé in Brussels, and I've always wondered who they were operated by. Are they US Blackhawks based in Brussels? Perhaps to support NATO in Evère?

I heard the story as well about those blackhawks. I think it has to do with nato business although I'm not sure. And of course perhaps there are some US units in Belgium concerning with international business.

It's like Kleine Brogel, I was surprised to learn there were US soldiers present at the airforce base. For what purpose they are there, I don't know.

I've scowered the net, looking for any mention of UH-60s either based in or near Brussels (nearest would be Chièvres air base, about 70km away), and so far, all i've found are the NATO Support Activity, US Army garrison in brussels, and that's it... Perhaps they're just flying over from Germany? Either way, it's a joy watching them fly past and their sound is distinctive. I've always liked the Blackhawk A few weeks ago, there were 3, flying in pretty close formation going back and forth to wherever they were going, overflying my house.

I don't think there are any blackhawks based in brussels.

But what I do know. at the HQ of the Belgian Army in Evere there is very often a blackhawk parked at the entrance for visitors (with car). That chopper is there everytime when i'm visiting the place. Don't know why, from where he's coming, etc... Probably liason?

Reduction of forces is the name of the game for almost everyone these days. Still, the Belgian army fields modern equipment, good planes and tanks, and, more importantly, good soldiers.

BTW, I just saw some of your Alpha Jets flying with the French Armee de l'Air during the air part of the military parade.

formation of belgian and french pilots is done together for some parts. So our alpha jets are based in france.

Modern equipment...that's partly true but on the other hand there's still M113, leopard 1, seaking, iltis,...
Of course we're in the middle of modernisation, but to be honest: I'm a little worried about the numbers of new vehicles that will be bought. I'm affraid that we won't be purchasing enough to equip all units properly...
But then again I'm no specialist...

And I can't say I like the fact that we're giving up on MBT's...

And it's not like the Belgian Paratroops are there, to "help" protesters over the fence. Some even get a bit ruffed up in the process, too...
