Its a hackle, its a Regimental thing. Some units put wear them under the capbadge on their balmoral(?).
actually, what is the story behind the plumes (i think thats what they call them) i saw a few guys wearing them in iraq and i never thought to ask.
ahh, i see, wish we'd do something cool with our uniforms. we have our division patch on our helmets (3rdID) which is rolly i carried my Infantry chord in my rucksack when i was in Iraq.
Nice way to camouflage yourself, with a huge red "shoot me for fvcks sake" feather-thing on your beret.
In battlefield surivaviblity comes first, traditions come......only if there's time for this.
Tells you how stable the area is if they're in that, 3rdMillhouse.

there was a thread a few months ago of the aussies doing the same thing. this unit had the traditional pinned-up slouch hat with a big feather pinned to the side as the troops were patrolling. they were a big hit with the iraqis.Originally Posted by 3rdMillhouse
usa_patriot, enjoy taking that foot out of your mouth. i imagine the brits will be happy to strick it elsewhere.
Incase you havent noticed, he isnt really walking around in an eviroment that you can hide with ease in.. AND his is in an effing vehicle that is a huge shoot here sign so i dont think the little red thing matters.
they seem to be at a checkpoint aswell. and as already mentioned, they look less intimidating to the civilians without the helmets on.
It's traditional regimental dress. British troops often wear their berets or head dress to show pride and appear less intimidating to the local population.Originally Posted by kaspur_eh
