Yeah, that and soldiers w/o helmets seem to put civilians at ease. I think one of the soldiers in the group of three has his helmet clipped to his belt or dangling off his belt, within reach in case of trouble.
there was a thread a few months ago of the aussies doing the same thing. this unit had the traditional pinned-up slouch hat with a big feather pinned to the side as the troops were patrolling. they were a big hit with the iraqis.

Incase you havent noticed, he isnt really walking around in an eviroment that you can hide with ease in.. AND his is in an effing vehicle that is a huge shoot here sign so i dont think the little red thing matters.
they seem to be at a checkpoint aswell. and as already mentioned, they look less intimidating to the civilians without the helmets on.
