Heard some very negative reports of Italians in Iraq from a variety of sources and a variety of nations.

There's some truth in those negative reports, but they are much inflated because of three reasons: cultural prejudice, old resentments (especially on the British side) and that (typically American) "either with us or against us" attitude.
The biggest truth is that Italy didn't deploy a particularly effective combat force, nor did it mean to do anything like fighting the "insurgency" for the sake of it. The biggest lie is that Italian troops used to simply take shelter inside of their base and systematically refused to fight back.

You cant just come to this or, any other forum and spout on about the performance of the Italian or, any other army for that matter, simply on the basis of "something that you have heard", without specifying the charges that you are making or, stating your personal experiences of their alleged failings. So either publish your sources, so that those accused can defend themselves or withdraw your statement, as I personally find it to be unfair, inaccurate and inflammatory.

Fans of the Lagunari should check out this link.

    http://www.associazionelagunari.it/missione_leonte.htm

you will find a number of TV news reports on the UN Operation Leonte deployments in late 2006. You will need to speak a little Italian to understand the reportage, but the pictures speak for themselves.

Thanks to Primus Severus Aemilianus for the original steer to the website.
