Also, how does OMON play out in the Russian anti-terror scene? I know that every city and principality in RU has one, but are they primarily CT units (like in the Dubrovka Theatre Hostage Crisis, 10/8/02) or are they just mainly crowd control?
Andrijia: Sweet avatar. That from the civil war there?

They are paramilitary forces which size varies from 100 in the smaller cities to over 3000 in Moscow. There are in total abot 150 OMON units all over Russia. Since their creation they acted as crowd control troops but also as a mobile reserve to be sent as enforcements in the so called "hot spots" in the former USSR and now in Russia. The typical SWAT-like units are called OMSN. However there are cities where their is not OMSN but there is OMON. In this case OMON acts also as apprehension teams and even as 'in extremis' hostage rescue teams. Some OMON units held their own "red beret" exams. The most prepared and elite OMON units are in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The Moscow OMON even has within a SWAT-type unit called GSN (Special Purpose Group).Originally Posted by CHERK
Not only. There were some ROSN/RSSN on the scene too. There was info that members from St. Petersburg's RSSN 'Grad" were there and even had casualtiesOriginally Posted by RomanS
Actually RSSNs are more professional and most of them had existed before USSR fell apart. ROSNs are based in smaller cities and are smaller in size.Originally Posted by redfox0035

Just wanted you guys to know that this sniper rifle so many "indentified" as "AW/AI" from Beslan (Accuracy International?) is no such thing, but Russian SV-98 and what ive heard of it actually makes for one of the least accurate bolt action "sniper rifles" anyhow, being over 2 MOA (even more) rather than sub 1 MOA shooter.
Regards.

You should review the photo again - the Alpha opperator is using Accuracy International Rifle - check identifying features of both rifles and compare the two.
Can't comment on the reports of poor accuracy - where do they originate from?
I'm afraid you're wrong on this one mate.Originally Posted by muede
The AI stock is the usual giveaway, but since AI stocks are used in all kinds of weapons these days (most popular being the venerable Remington 700), let's not jump in to conclusions yet.
While the actions look a bit similar on both weapons, the missing iron sights support the fact that it's an AI product.
And the fact that it reads "AI" on the side of the scope...well, heh
