Cool, i didnt know the EPIGN operated overseas. Are they usually tasked with embassy protection, or only in real hot zones?

French embassies are usually guarded by Gendarmerie Mobile members, but an EPIGN detachment is often deployed in hot zones (Abidjan, Baghdad, Beirut, you name it). Police members and Gendarmes (not just from the Gendarmerie Mobile) can apply for embassy duty. Since embassies are considerd as home territory, they're not really operating overseas, except when they have to carry out escort and NEO duties, as in these 'hot zones'. In that case, I'm not sure whether Police Nationale members could operate outside the embassy perimeter.

There's a good chance most of the lebannon pics are not of EPI, but of police protection service.

Hanun, kidnapped along with French journalist Florence Aubenas, was freed after a five-month-long hostage ordeal in this war torn country. The pair was abducted by an unknown group after leaving her hotel in Baghdad on January 5, triggering a massive public campaign in France and elsewhere in Europe for their release. French security operators evacuate French nationals from Beirut, 20 July 2006, by helicopter to Cyprus. Thousands of foreigners fled Lebanon by air, sea and land today as the international community picked up the pace of its evacuations following the deadliest day yet of Israeli attacks. I think you meant EPIGN, not GIPN...
