    Default Question about old forts

In reference to the thread I posted in the Photos section, does anyone know anything about the harbour defences in and around Portland, Maine? The most I've been able to find are those pictures (from 1927) and short histories of the regiment that was garrisoned here, but little else. My college has taken over the remaining buildings, and there are placards on most of them that tell you what each building used to be (before the base was deactivated).

The 5th Infantry was garrisoned here at the old Fort Preble and at Fort McKinley from 1922-1940. Preble was deactivated in 1950.

Does anybody has some pictures or something that would perhaps illustrate what the old base looked like when it was active?

I'm looking for something like this:

The history of this area fascinates me, partly because I'm from this area originally, and my grandfathers both served around here. I'll have to dig up a book that one of them had.... it's pretty neat. There are some good pictures in it. I'll post them when I find the book.
