Awesome video thanks a ton , the same gentleman has made a video of PARA SF and US SF training in Alaska. I posted that some time back.
The NDTV video was as disappointing as I thought it would be, but good to see all that new gear. Was happy to see Ballistic helmets replace the Piece of **** BP Patka. And looks like they have bought new personnel communication sets to replace the motorola headsets. Nice !!
I think I should save some money to shoot a documentary on PARA SF, wonder how much it would cost to hire the guys who shot Discovery Channels Surviving The Cut??
Actually, patkas (which also fit into the category of ballistic helmets) are infinitely more safer than any kevlar helmet. All those cool kevlar helmets you see being worn by forces all over the world provide no protection against 5.56 mm NATO round (leave alone AK's 7.62mm). Patkas do.
Neither Patka nor Kevlar helmets can give you 100% protection. But having used it for 5 years , I had a wonderful experience trying to wear night vision device along with it. Trying to wear the headset of the motorola radiosets along with it was a night mare. At least the kevlar helmet lets you use a headset while wearing it. And the attachments to mount your night vision equipment makes it easy to use.
The Patka has foam on top, it is basically a kevlar band around your head with no protection on top. I wondered if the guy who came up with it actually thought you wouldn't be shot at from any other angle in combat. What if the adversary is at a height and opens fire when your passing below??
In 2003, when the invasion of Iraq had just started. There was an article about a british Royal Marine commando who took a head shot , but was unharmed because his kevlar helmet took the impact and stopped the 7.62mm round. I read about it right here. Wonder if it is still around.

3rd from last postPatka, PASGT, MICH, whatever.. nothing can guarantee 100% protection like you said, but they all give you a chance at least.

Fair enough. Wearing a headset is a pain in the ass with patka. And I know that patka provides no protection on top...that is a tradeoff to limit its already large weight. But to say that kevlar is comparable to patka for protection against 7.62mm round...well that is simply not true. Kevlar provides no protection whatsoever against 7.62mm round simply because it was not designed to do so. Kevlar helmets are designed to protect only against splinters and 9mm rounds. On the other Hand patka provides good protection against AK round from the front and 9mm round from behind. Not perfect...but certainly not something to look down upon.
That doesn't mean that I am against induction of kevlar helmets. Both have their own places. And since weight is a much bigger issue for SF soldiers, kevlar helmets suit them better. Not to mention that wearing night vision is simply not possible with patka...a point which you have already mentioned.
