France doesn't operate mig-29s. Perhaps he has confused the East German Mig-29s? In that case he was right as at the time AMRAAM was still a dream and BVR were generally crap so WVR was what was important. With helmet mounted sights and high offboresight R-73 missiles the Mig-29 and Su-27 were superior to any contemporary western fighter. That changed when AMRAAM was introduced.

Im pretty sure they their Mig 29s would decimate the opponents. Remember in 1995 or close to that time when Serbian Mig29s annhilated dozens of F-16s etc... and lost very little. The Mig 29 is superior to almost any allied aircraft and lets not forget their capablity to shoot down stealth aircraft (serbia downed F-117s)
