    M113 Forever

A few years ago Denmark completed an upgrading-program for the M113. The upgrade was developed and carried out by FFG(Germany). It's now called M113G3 and 257 were upgraded. Out of the 257 70 were also added an extra roadwheel(and 666mm).
This upgrade has given us a completely new APC, and together with some other new stuff(intercom, optical sight for M2, etc.) we can keep the M113 in service for another 15-20 years. And the users love their M113G3..

Do you know any similar projects???

Some Rafael passive armor too by the looks of it.

Do you know any similar projects???
Israel has/had a plan to upgrade some 50 M113s (including with reactive armor) but last I heard it has been held up.

We have some 3,000 M113s if I'm not mistaken.

Our M113A1/A2s should be soon slated either for upgrade (at least the special purpose variants like the M106A1, M113A1 ambulances, M125A1, M577A2, M901A1 ITV) or replacement. But as replacing over 2000 APCs will cost a bundle, I think the upgrade option is more likely.

Best upgrade would be to destroy and order new APCs then that box on tracks. Doesn't even have firing ports...

    I tend to agree.

Our problem is that we can't resell our M113s even if there was anyone interested in buying (as they were provided as part of the U.S military aid).

They only have a place as self-propelled mortar platforms in my opinion.

Firing ports are passe. All new IFVs (with the exception of earlier BMP-3s) lack them. Mounted action in the face of even moderate opposition can be suicidal, as a single direct hit can take out the entire squad. Plus weapon aiming is problematic, and can be used only for suppresive rather than precision fire. Also, without the firing ports the rigidity of the armor is greater and it is easier to improve protection with applique armor packages, either passive or explosive reactive. They are still "in" for Internal Security vehicles, but not for front line APC/IFVs.
The M113 with a good upgrade still has a place in a modern army, as it is a comparatively roomy and ubiquitous vehicle.

Agree, it's lightweight design makes the M113 a great vehicle for upgrades...:

dont know anything about m113, but there are projects in the works to upgrade the Bradley with a 30mm cannon, and design a Medical version of the Bradley without the turret.

Italian VCC1, 560 vehicles built in early '80, now they're going to be upgraded with a new power pack

With the EAAK armor from FMS (20mm front protection and 14,5mm AP on 360 degrees, RPG effects reduction)

    With the Israeli armor

Yeah it'll be awhile before we stop seeing the M113 and varients in U.S. Army motor pools, even with the Stryker replacing many of them.

Do any of our combat vets on this forum know how frequently firing from rifle ports has been done in Iraq from Brads as an example ?

I hear the feature is vastly overrated.
