Difference as in trigger fell, no, not at all, but it sure did make the installation process a snap.

I order the 5.45 receiver early this year, and then it was back ordered for about three months. Meantime, i order a complete Tantal kit for the build.

Once I got the Tantal kit, the only part used were the barrel. I had to cut off the front handguard cap since it is encompass the gas tube and the handguard assembly. It did not allow the use of Ultimak top rail. so I dermal off the top of the cap and try to used the existing handguard mate to the modified cap and the Ultimak rail. Well, the top of the modified cap was too tall and it was hitting the bottom of the Ultimak rail and I couldn't cut the handguard cap any lower since it will expose the locking pin and render it useless. so... decision was made, since I can't go back and used the original top cover so I decide to cut off the entire front cap and use the Ultimak rail handguard.

Of course this is a little side story to this. My original plan was to run the Blackjack buffer handguard rail that they are selling. Those were made in China and the rail spec was sooooo off, i had to return it. The side rail had so little stand off; I can't mount anything to the side rail, not even the rail cover without hitting the Ultimak rail top cover.

But once the entire handguard assembly was removed, I ordered the Ultimak handguard, it was one of the better designs and made rail for AK I have seen. the rail spec had a small stand off issue, but it was not big deal.

I then order the Sheppard hook, Parts from Krebs Custom were the rear adjustable peep sight, the safety, and the trigger assembly.

then i ordered the rear stock assembly from K-Var. the only trouble with this original look is the trunnion for the folder had to be fitted into the receiver. that means some cutting of the receiver was required. Being the spend the money to get it done right type of guy.. (not a DIY) I requested Armory USA to do the fitting. once the receiver was back from Armory, I realize how much work was involved and i was glad that Armory did the work, and a fine work that did. the receiver turned out perfect.

One more problem, due to some import law, Armory refused to install the Tantal barrel. So I had a friend with a press and we pressed the barrel in ourselves. at the same time, I sand blasted the entire barreled receiver and give it once over with Duracoat. Let me just say, it was a process to sand blast and Duracoat, but this paint is amazing. It is one of the most beautiful and most durable finishes I have ever used.

the rest is history. a little here and a little there, Surefire, Aimpoint and TangoDown round out the package. Of course, an US made Tantal brake was added.

Finally I retained the original grip because it had to have something kind of retro to it. I kind of like it better then any other type of grip on the market.

    Very nice AK74, SMGLee!
Are you in California? If so, is there a way around the state's gun laws that allows you to have your weapons?
    Just curious.

The scope rail/mounts seem to mount it a lot higher. There maybe other mounts you can use. Also there is a cheek rest, leather for the M1 Garand that may work to elevate your cheek, so your eye will naturally align with the scope.

That cheek rest sounds like a good idea. Any site you prefer to order such things from?

This is Tapcos receiver flat page. Somebody makes a formed receiver, I believe it is a FFL item. Maybe ask SMGLee. The Tapco flats are not a FFL item.
Hollis, what is the typical recovery time for Tapco backorders? I ordered a few flats and it's been 3 weeks with no reply to a request for feedback.

Do you heat treat only parts of the receiver or the whole thing at once? I have read of problems with warping.

I would call Tapco, on the back order.

I never noticed warping, the receiver in not that prescission to worry about it. The top and the rail have to be treated. I would heat part and then dip it, and continue till I was done. A torch seems to work the easiest.
