On the AK, the neat thing the receiver can be adjusted by the good old wack with the hammer. The bends without a jig, can cause slight errors, those errors can generally be fixed. So far I have been able to wack them into place. I use a brass hammer with little light taps.
I am in the process of two more AKs, the under folder (AK74) rear stock mount requires a better fit than most. The other AK (AK47) will have a wooden stock.
How did the AWB affect parts kits and would another AWB affect the ones that you have already constructed??
After all, is there a way apart from taking a picture with built AK and that days newspaper of identifying when they were built?
Geezah, Proof, I believe is on the burden of the state. I keep receipts. Also I don't know what bans would apply to kits outside of the NFA ban. Tapco sell compliant parts, not sure if that is from some other act of the NFA.
Oregon does not have a AWB on parts like Washington, Calif, and some other states.
Because of Eminent Domain (I Believe) Congress will use a band based on some future time. Reason to declare a item illegal to own after it has been own, congress would have to buy it at market value. That is what Assault ban, created two markets, Post and Pre.
And that is one reason Full auto are so expensive.
The AK I am building has compliant parts and do not violate the NFA, they are not full auto. The kits comes as a full auto components. But the Trigger assy/hammer, is replaces as part of the compliance parts list.
Only full auto parts I know are illegal to possess are the Parts necessary to convert a Military (Not repro) M1 Carbine to M2 Carbine. Those parts in themselves are classifieds as a "full auto firearm". To ban the M1 Military carbine, the Gover. would have to buy them from the owners. Currently somewhere between $600 - $800 + in value.
Oh, I wasn't refering to NFA, I was curious if you were able to build AKs out of parts kits during the ban, and well, you asnswered the 2nd part of the question for me.
I was thinking about putting one of the polymer folding stockings onto my AK, but I decided against it as I thought I may have to change a another part out to be compliant as the folding stock is Russian.
The ban really did not effect building AK as long as They did not have a folding stock, bayonet lug. Kits were available. I build a CAR, but on a pre ban receiver so I was ok, The CAR was FFL transfer receiver. A home made receiver would have been Illegal at the time. I never built a less than 80% AR receiver, tooo expensive for taps etc.
Kits sold during the ban was still under the Ban. The ban really did not do much out side of a folding stock and bayonet lug. There where tons of AK mags available. It mainly screwed people who where buying New. During the ban a pre-ban rifle could have a folding stock added to it, but not a post ban rifle. That is my understanding, but no longer is important
The "auto sear," a small thin piece of metal that converted the AR15 to full-auto is also considered NFA by the folks at "Guns-R-Us."
Back in the '80s, Cobray/M10/Ingram "flats" were around SoFla by the hundreds and if they were drilled were considered NFA as well, but I haven't seen them in years.
Great idea for a thread, CJ. HOLLis you do some beautiful work. I'm surprised how little time it takes for results that nice.
Laconia, thanks. I know a guy who bought one of those drop in make a semi into auto thing. It is a rather simple doo hicky. I am just not a fan of full auto, Once in a decade or so a mad moment is cool.
There is plenty of info on auto, don't recommend it, Probably because I shoot a lot of single shot stuff.
If a person never shot full auto, some ranges have full auto shoots, Class III holder and ammo, for a small fee you can try that stuff out.
I am baking my last two AKs.... they were dicy to make. For some reason I had to get a bigger hammer out. When they are assembled and test fired, I will show some pics. One is a underfolder AK74, the other a wooden stock AK74.
Sorry for the photo, After I took the pics I found the settings were altered.
Will try to take some later, ot these will have to do. each one was harder to do that the Side folder.. small mistakes I made in folding had to be adjusted Via Big hammer. The underfolder is a AK74.
