Thread: Smoking ban's

    Default Smoking ban's

Not sure how big of an issue this is in other countries but here in the states smoking bans are starting to pop-up all over. Being a non-smoker myself I have a bit of a different out look on the situation. As far as public property is concerned, I believe it should be just that property that is owned by the public. Therefore the public should vote or publicly elected officials should vote and let the majority decide. Were I believe the politicians have crossed the line is when you have privately owned property, Bars and such, were smoking is now prohibited. Shouldn’t it be up to the owner of the establishment to say weather or not they want to allow smoking on the property they own.

In France, smoking will be forbidden everywhere (in bars, public places) in 2008. Notice some bars and such have already forbidden smoking.
Currently it's only forbidden at your work place and inside public places.
In some high schools like university you can only smoke outside. But some universities have already banned smoking inside and outside !

It will be law in Australia soon.

Personally I think it should be up to the individual business to decide wether they allow smoking on their premises. (hotels, pubs and stuff) However the due to how much employees could potentially recieve in compensation if they get lung cancer and or other associated deseases linked to smoking then insurance premiums will cost a fortune and places will ban smoking anyway.

I'm a smoker. However I accept that smoking the workplace is wrong. Especially in an office. As a matter of fact except for some close families properties I prefer to smoke outside anyway. Smoking indoors is rude IMO unless it's a dedicated old fashioned "smoke room"

Smoking bans have come in place in a few states here in Australia. It's good you can go out on the piss and not come home smelling like the bottom of an ash tray.

Its been like that in South Africa for a while. Most every restaurant has a smoking and non-smoking section that are blocked off from each other. Generally there is no smoking inside public places either.

Not a problem for me as I don't smoke.

My problem is not the smoking part of it like I said I do not smoke it is more the fact that they are telling people that they are not allowed to smoke on property which they own and pay taxes on. If you don’t like the fact that someone is smoking in a bar, pub, or restaurant that they own, DON’T GO THERE.

Scotland now has a total ban in all public areas in bars, pubs, restaurants, shops, cinemas, theatres, public buildings etc., this took effect from 1st April 2006. England/Wales is due to get the same next year I think.

We`ve had a smoking ban in all commercial buildings for a few years now and as much as I b*tch about having to stand outside in the cold, it has made me cut down on the amount I smoke especially when in a pub or club.

We'll be having a law that allows smoking in ventilated smoking "boxes" in bars and restaurants. Which is nice because I really dislike having all my clothes washed everytime I visit a bar.
Total bans are bad but in public places where there are others (except outside of course) you should be required to have a separate ventilated smoking area if you want to smoke there.

As a casual smoker, I understand that not everyone enjoys smoking, or smoke, like I do. When I smoke outside in public I try to be conscientious of people around me and my surroundings. The problem is that a Nazified health-nut attitude has taken over, especially in the US. Random people feel the need to approach smokers, even in areas that allow smoking, and berate them for their habit. I hear people throw around the idea all the time that "smoking is stupid and should be banned everywhere" etc. Non-smokers do have a right to enjoy smoke-free facilities, but the attitude of some is that they have a right to go anywhere they please without enduring tobacco smoke. There needs to be a happy medium, privately owned places should be able to allow smoking in their own establishments, as long as they clearly identify themselves as such. Smokers can frequent those establishments, and non-smokers can steer clear...but that's not good enough for some people.

On a related note, I read that Calabasas, CA passed a ban on all public smoking, any comments on that?

Private property that is open to the public is not like your home. The Government has the right to protect the health of the public.

In the US every year about 400,000 people die from tobacco related health issues.

Health care, Ok who pays of that, can it be minimized?

If a person chooses to live a more riskier life style who should assume the responsibilities for that risk? Should the state assume it?.

Same with industries that pour pollutants into OUR common atmosphere. Should they be regulated?

Difficult issues. Free choice VS who assumes responsibility.

It's interesting how times have changed. In the 40s it almost seemed that more people smoked than didn't. Of course people weren't aware of the health considerations at that time.
I can remember going to visit a buddy in the hospital in 1981 And I was allowed to smoke in his room. Now in some places you have to be
X number of feet from a building if you want to smoke outside. Although I respect the right of others to not have to be subjected to 2nd hand smoke,
I think in some cases they get a little too nuts about it.

    I smoke.
Starting smoking just might be the most retarded decision I have ever made...not including marying my first wife.

I do not smoke indoors...that's just nasty...a non-smoker can eat their meal without my smoke ruining their night out...likewise at clubs and bars, I'd rather step out and enjoy the outside while I smoke.

Making it illegal to smoke in public buildings, offices, resturaunts etc... has no effect on me, nor my smoking habit. But eliminating smoking from an outside area, away from nonsmokers, is the last straw. I pay a higher insurance premium than non-smokers, I pay the taxes on my tobacco products, and I take care to not smoke around non-smokers..for courtesy, if not for their health concerns.

But I have been known to blow a plume of cigarrette smoke into the face of anyone that has the audacity to hunt me out and harrass me while I smoke a quick 'cig around the corner of a bar or restraunt...If you drove to the bar, don't give me crap about pollution...if you are standing there breathing Houston, TX air, don't start on your health concerns with me, and if you had to go out of your way to come find me outback to give me a hard time about my nicotine addiction, hope you enjoy a face-full of carcinogins...and if thats not enough, I just might flick my butt into your hair. I guess that about covers my feelings on smoking bans.
