    Dear Ex-Cop,

I am pretty well read on military aviation matters (I use to write defense articles in the 1980s and early 1990s till it took time away from my regular job where the real money was). Recently I received the link below. I could not believe that something could be that secret. Then I did some research and discovered it was a computer gaming link. <G>

    Dear Diman,

That top photo of the 14.5mm antitank rifle, the PLA in the Korean War had them in their units and US soldiers called them "Buffalo Guns" (after the large caliber rifles of the late 1800s used in the West of USA) and while the Chinese did not hit anyone the extreme long range sniping fire kept everyone ducking in US trench positions.

White cars show the rust more.

If the same vehicle was beige or even olive green, you would not notice the rust.

I have seen many 1-2 year old American/Japanese/European vehicles with some rust on them. They were all white.

Having said that, I agree that the GAZ Tigr doesn't have the best fit and finish. But it looks awesome.

I would love to have one. I'll take mine in dark military green.

    Diman,

Your photos of the 14.5 mm anti-tank gun are great. Thanks for posting and welcome to mp.net

Nowadays, most heavy caliber sniper rifles seem to be of 12.7 mm (.50 cal). I see a huge potential for the 14.5 mm caliber on the battlefield. An appropriate anti-armour round would be able to pierce the protective skin of a modern APC. It can also create havoc in enemy infantry positions.

No way you could make the SVD take belted ammo without extensive modification.

Yeah, figures, I thinking about that just now. It would be a pain in the ass to modify a SVD to use belt fed ammo.

    Dear Ex-Cop,

Per your message on the documentary on the B-17 bases for the USAAF in Russia for shuttle bombing. Thought you would find the link interesting.

Finally, to this day there are those in the USAF (that replaced the USAAF in 1947) that Stalin deliberately allowed the secret base to be discovered -- ie even though after the war the German's stated they had a specialized JU-88 follow them back to the base and it radio back the location to German bombers already in the air. But to their credit the USAAF personnel at the bombed base stated the Russians showed extreme bravery in helping to put out the fire and rescue others wounded in that bombing raid.

    Dear Member,

One nation of the former Warsaw Pact already has a 14.5mm anti-material rifle. That is the big mis-understanding about these large caliber high velocity rifles. They were never intended for anti-personnel or antiarmor. They are long range anti-material: eg radar units, aircraft on airfields, fuel storage, ammo storage, etc. There are far better options for anti-personnel sniping and antiarmor today.
