This is really messed up IMO. everything is cancelled and the rest are in perpetual development. BTR-90 "in testing" for years then cancelled, BTRT "in testing" for years, object-195 and beat goes on! now the sprut wont be produced anymore, BMD-4 on hold? what exactly is the "new" weapons for the army? so what is it the planing to buy for this "modernization" besides AD?
New platforms that will materialize in 2025 or when? I don't get these folks.
look at it this way. why spend all this money on smth that will most likely be obsolete or incompatible with new systems just some 10 years down the road given there is an massive uptick in R&D right now compared to 90s and early 2000s. these are all fine systems but some of them are more than quarter century old in design and totally lack any of the more modern improvements they could have. and what's the rush to spend billions of dollars on them? just to have fanboys all happy on MP.net?
2025 is just 14 years from now. considering almost nothing other than various upgrades happened over the last 20-25 years that is not much time to wait. older systems have their export value but if you are talking a MODERN LEAN MEAN KILLIN MACHINE that the russian army is suppose to turn into as suggested by the ongoing reforms then what is the point of buying all that 'khlam'?
think out of the box folks. and really what immediate threats are there that the MOD has to rush into buying all the "morally obsolete" as popovkin lieks to say systems? China? yeah if you are Kharamchihin nut. Georgia? NATO? yeah sure like that is gonna happen again. Islamic terrorists? they are being taken care of already. what's the RUSH? and why spend billions on systems a QUARTER CENTURY OLD in design?
^^ Ill add there is this thing that military always waits for more domestic/localised electronics, components. Soviet /Russian vehicle engines also were not their strong side. So to wait a little and develop really modern engine(on par or better than western one) is worth it IMO.
Also to emphasise what you said all new vehicles need to have a considerable space inside for C4 equipment.
Buying these platforms now won't hurt at all. Russia is still fielding BMP-1s that were produce decades back, t-72, even shilkas that are several decades old and you are saying that spruts will somehow be useless in 10 years because they are obsolete? I don't quite agree there. Those spruts can be upgraded if need be.
Wait for what? there is such a thing as stop-gap, while R&D is ongoing. Let say in 10 year this omnipotent platform materializes and they start procurement in typical Russian fashion, it will take another 10-20 year to field them in any useful numbers, that means the old BMP et al will have to soldier on 20+years into the future because someone thinks what's available now is not good enough.
you need commonality of platforms that's what I think they are aiing for with projects like Armata and Kurganets... having all these different systems is NOT the smartest move. not to mention we are not talking about getting rid of what they have. just NOT buying any of the old designs that will have to be supported along with newer systems they expect to adopt within next 10-15 years. even Armata is suppose to be adopted by 2015. although 2018-2020 is more like it. but nonetheless the decision to put buying older designs on hold seems logical to me. it's very simple and it's amazing how few ppl get it
also remember they are revamping the manufacturing base to be able to handle production of radically new systems. putting money into modernization and creation of modern technological manufacturing makes a lot more sense than keeping OLD factories with their crappy obsolete last century Soviet inefficiencies producing OLD stuff
