The Soviets had tank divisions and motor rifle divisions. Post WWII both units had tanks and infantry, a tank unit having rather more tanks than infantry but still infantry units were a part of a tank unit just as tank units were part of the infantry units. In the infantry units the tanks formed a smaller fraction of forces than infantry units. Front line Motor Rifle units tended to have the best, most expensive stuff, while lower readiness units had cheaper vehicles. There were two distinct classes in the end of Motor Rifle units and Tank units. The top units had the latest model tracked transporters... ie BMP (1,2,3) and the newest tanks, while the lower readiness units had wheeled transporters like the BTR series and older tanks. For many years the US has poured scorn on the utility of the wheeled BTRs, but they are much cheaper to buy and operate than track layers and got the Soviet infantry out of trucks into something with some armour protection and firepower.

Between 1950 and 1970 infantry units were renamed motorized infantry after they were completely equipped with armored transport vehicles (BTR-152/50/60 and BMP-1). Being equipped with trucks did not qualified for being a motorized unit.
By the mid-70s no AFV-less units were left, so now they are all called motorized infantry.
