2,5 years from laid down till commisioning despite 4 times the size.
Russia inherited almost all soviet naval power (except some vessels and nikolayev shipyard remaining in Ukraine), but managed to waste most of it during Jelzin years and continues to destroy the rest under Putin/Medvedev.
Most of the soviet-built ships are nearing the end of their service life, while the shipyards receive payments in small grains so construction of small corvettes or diesel submarines takes more then of 50 times larger ships elsewhere.
This policy will lead to death of russian naval shipbuilding within the next few decades and the country will be reverted to pre-industrial conditions of Czarist Russia where most first line combat ships were built abroad. And this seems to fit some in russias ruling circles.
Which technical gaps? Considering the claim all electronical and combat equipment will be russian, it's just the hull they are buying. Did NPKB lost the capability to develop a steel hull after 50 years of project work?The Soviet industries like the aviation sometimes grew from first reverse-engineering western models that came into their procession during WW2. They will also gain some valuable tactical expertise in the areas of modern project management and manufacturing processes. So please spare us from all the hysteria with Russian shipbuilding industry disappearing. The experience of building and operating Mistral class ships allows to forgo certain related R&D costs and mistakes and lends plenty of opportunity to fill the gaps in the areas of technological know how and manufacturing.
Also a horror to imagine how long those three Mistrals to be built on russian shipyards will take.
The problem is not the technology, the problem is the all-spawning corruption which prevents the funding to reach russian shipyards.
Then let's wait for this industrial revival? So far nothing in sight. And will hardly be as long there is no political revival.There is simply no time to wait for the Russian shipbuilding to kickback from its lethargic state. The process of improving strategic situation has to run in parallel to any economic and industrial revival. Simple as that.
Also this 'barge' will have quite a bite in Russian Marines' hands. Russians are about to launch serial production of 2S31 Vena, T90 tanks, BRDM-3 and BTR-82A specifically for the Russian Marines.

Corruption has to be defeated first, otherwise the 3 vessels to be built in russia will take over 20 years each to be completed. Actually even equipping the lead ship with russian equipment will take longer then french spent on a complete ship, if the equipment will be delivered in current manner.
Mistral is a completely senseless deal which address nor the military, nor the military-industrial problems of Russia.
