A guy on a Russiam forum about AFV's, who is belived to work in UVZ, said that T-90M, T-90AM and Armata is one and the same thing... but maybe it was just bad translation, so to be honest I don't know, this is very confusing.
Yeah T-90AM and Armata are two different project , the former is an upgrade for T-90 or a heavily upgrade variant of T-90A , where Armata is a new project designed from scratch which takes inputs from T-95 and Black Eagle program

Armata is not a tank, but a project of a universal heavy plattform, on which will be based artillery... MBT, etc.
No, developement phases do not match, unless T-90AM and earlier T-90M were different projects, which they aren´t, or unless the new Armata would be based on T-90 platfform, which is very unlikely. Besides, it was stated that the new MBT based on it will use project 195´s developements.A guy on a Russiam forum about AFV's, who is belived to work in UVZ, said that

You are right , it skipped my mind.
Yes there is official statement from senior officials that the new tank will have technologies developed from black eagle and Object 195 , at other places there are statements that it would be a hybrid tank and engine of 1500 hp and 1800 hp are being tested. No, developement phases do not match, unless T-90AM and earlier T-90M were different projects, which they aren´t, or unless the new Armata would be based on T-90 platfform, which is very unlikely. So its quite safe to say T-90AM and Armata are two different project , although they share a common 125 mm caliber MG![]()

The drop of the 155mm caliber is a pity. Developement of new munitions was really interesting, especially new gun launched missiles (you could fit something like a Kornet there!) with more power or even fire and forget capabilities. But 125mm is enought against today´s and nearer term foreign developements. I think that they designed it in a way that you could fit a larger one in case of necessity.
The gun would not be the same either. There are new developements with higher ballistic properties to substitute current 2A46 models or wathever, but yes, they will share the same 125mm calibre.
Hibrid, electrical transmission? there is a project, but it is made for future SAM systems, not sure if by the same company. Armata, I do not think so.
Bigger caliber would mean they need more space to carry same ammo or with smaller size they can carry less ammo , like you rightly said most of NATO threats can be effectively dealt with 125 mm cal gun and better ammo.
T-90AM has a new gun , some one mentioned in another board that it would be better then L55 and it will carry a new autoloader for long rods , lets see what comes up.The gun would not be the same either. There are new developements with higher ballistic properties to substitute current 2A46 models or wathever, but yes, they will share the same 125mm calibre.
