    Yes, but that is Tu-214ON.

The article mentions several multi-frequency antennas, plus an optronic surveillance suite.

What kind of intelligence are we talking about here, I wonder? Russian version of P-8 Poseidon? The blip-like radar under the belly looks a lot like Tu-142 MPA.

Perhaps as a replacement for Tu-95RTs as a missile guidance/battle management unit (but then why optics?)?

I am trying to figure out what else would it be useful as. Any ideas?

I'm in London, FSB can't touch me, haha.

No, seriously, any ideas about intended use?

    - AWACS (doesn't seam likely)
    - VKP type comms repeater (doesn't seem likely)
    - MPA
    - JSTARS

I like the MPA idea. Il-38 is getting replaced by Il-38N, but it would be good to have something new to replace Tu-142, although they are not that old.

So far I couldn't find any decent pictures, only this Youtube clip. The mechanised part of the parade (starting at 27:00) consisted of the Tigr, the BTR-82A and the new MRL "Tornado-G" (from 30:20)!
I finally found this - small - picture of the Tornado that was shown in Vladikavkaz. It differs somewhat from the "real" 2B17M especially the forward part of the launch tubes. That plate in front looks like the one from the 2B17-1 upgrade that was reveiled in 2003. Normally it should have the small boxes that contain the fuze setting devices. They are also lacking on the vehicle that was paraded in Perm (my post #50500).

MPA would be great, I agree, but I can't see any acoustic buoy launcher nor weapon bay.
    My guess goes to J-STAR.

It is modernisation "Grad", but not "Tornado".

Well, as I wrote there are some differences with the "real" Tornado. And if you watch the Youtube clip you will notice that the speaker announces the vehicle as "RSZO Tornado".

I wish the Russians would stick to one upgrade instead of making things always so complicated. It's the same with the combat aircraft, T-72 etc. And now the Grads. And why on earth do they put the Tornados (or modernised Grads) on Ural 4320, while on the other hand they have the 2B26 on KamAZ-5350?

Not quite clear - why the old, modernized system is named as a "new theme".
The "genuine" Tornado - 2 blocks on 15 rockets and chassis BAZ-6950.

That's not what I read, including in Russian sources like this one.

I doubt it's the MPA — there's no MAD boom present, and too many side-looking antennas that would hardly be useful for the maritime patrol, while for the JSTARS role it might hit the spot.
