So, what are your thoughts on the camo decisions? Now each base will have their own camo. I think it would have been better if everything was the dark/gray camo.![]()
Not that my opinion matters, but I don't like the dark gray camo, because it makes no sense to me. The Su-35S in the photoshopped all gray camo (without the blue underside) looks good, and the T-50 would too, but it still doesn't make sense.
It doesn't provide any camouflage in the air, it even makes the aircraft stand out a lot more on a much bigger distance (I once read something about the black noses on the early F-16s making them stand out) than for example a simple light-gray camo or the new faded blue/light gray camo on the first Su-35S's. And it also doesn't camouflage against the concrete of the taxiway when the aircraft are parked.
But this is typically Russian Military, they always handle camouflage and colors very amateurily, like something some private person would come up with in his garage. That starts at the camouflage of uniforms and ends at 50 million dollar airplanes.
dark grey has been shown to be more effective than black when operating at night because it is never completely dark and a black aircraft shows as a silhouette. this is why the B-2 bomber is dark grey. it could be that this camo is to protect from being seen at night from higher flying aircraft...
Hated the two color system. The camo on the Su-35S was such a beauty, and hope to see something similar on the PAK FA.
Russian short range aviation mostly stay put in the area were it assigned and it usually have same terrain pattern. OTOH long range dudes stay monochrome, see bomber fleet or heavy interceptors. So different cammies on different bases makes sense, and it's not some fashionista trend.
