It's a tripod for an optical device, large binoculars or more likely a stereoscopic range finder. Used with field artillery or AAA.

Judging by a hundred pictures that were labeled wrong before, I have a suggestion that it might be South Ossetians. Why? Long hair and facial hair, 2 45 round RPK magazines taped together, definitely not Russian tactical vests, no helmets in sight. BMP might be a captured Georgian. If you got any other ideas, please share them.

caucasians have a strong facial hair growing. On TV you can see a lot of georgian soldiers with a facial hair. (One russian guy told me a story about his armenian friend who served in soviet army. This poor armenian had to shave every morning, sometimes two times per day)
About "nonwestern" vest and weapon - only a few brigades of georgians had a western assault rifles and gear and this elite forces (trained by foreign specialists) had a biggest casualties in this conflict. They were professional soldiers, but the rest of georgian forces are poorly trained. You can expect that simple soldiers can take off their helmets during a combat (expecially when their asses are kicked and thy are retreating) Other georgian soldiers have poorer equipment - AK, soviet steel helmets, soviet AK ammo pouches (TV)
S.ossetian militia dont have any uniform discipline, but they dont use georgian MARPAT uniforms. I cannot imagine a situation that three s.ossetian militants are wearing full georgian uniform (trousers, jacket, patrol cap, combat-2 boots)

The wearing of the boots may have been more of a "necessity". You wouldn't see a British soldier dressed in an Argentinian uniform and M1 steel helmet, now would you?

The 'unprofessional' British soldiers in the Falklands used Argentinian boots - because they were better than their own.....

With the exception of a few specific items of kit, Argentine units were as well equipped as the British. Their clothing was superior. Acquiring a pair of the excellent Argentine boots to replace their own sodden footwear was a high priority for British soldiers and marines, leading to much amusement when on at least one occasion the ‘corpse’ being stripped jumped to its feet and ran off into the darkness. British soldiers carrying Sterling sub-machine guns threw them away and picked up Argentine FALs which fired automatic unlike the British self-loading rifle. The ubiquitous Argentine .5-inch heavy machine guns were a lethal menace, as were their 120-mm heavy mortars. The British had neither — until we captured them in battle.

I don't doubt that we could find instances of other armies doing the same??

The problem was that British paras were short of ammunition, both to SMG and to mortars... no wonder they took captured weapons. Same for boots... as they had to march for days through swampy and wet areas. But there is difference between combat necessity during fighting and using captured equipment becouse your own is ****ty.

T-72's and M4's are war trophies.. Uniforms, helmets, bikes and TV's are not.

Look, Georgia officially declared war on Russia, so anything Russia takes as a winner is a "trophy" this includes all military hardware including the soldiers tin can and goggles.

Why do you think our equipment is such as you wrote? As you can see less then half of the soldiers use parts of georgian uniform (mainly t-shirts - the first thing to be bad smelled and dirty in that hot conditions)
