Can someone enlighten me why they're painting the trees white (after staring at the three pair of legs to the left)?

Mostly, from snow-reflected sunlight (it can burn the bark)

We saw loads of them like that driving from Anapa to Gelendzhik.

I don't think they get much snow down by the Black Sea.....

The trees that had whitewash on the lower trunks were the ones right next to the road - and the explanation given to us was that it was to reflect the cars headlights at night.

So it was an aid to safe driving.......

Ahem, actually it's normal procedure, not only in army, in winter, rodents that move under snow cover, and don't hybernate in winter, especially city rats, eat etherything they can get, so they can pick tree clean of bark so they - military, comunal service, gardeners, always paint trees on aprox snow level, and not with paint, but with Раствор извести (English?)

    It's insecticide, not technically paint.
