It seems that in all incidents the flames were extinguished quickly and there was no serious injury.

As part of the effort to modernize its military, the Polish government has brought a close to conscription, making last week's class of drafted recruits the final one after 90 years of compulsory military service.

A young recruit waiting in line at the base in Radom. After a history of being conquered by Russia and Germany, and at times disappearing from the map entirely, Poles worry more acutely than people in many other countries about questions of national defense.

Draftee Piotr Piotrkowicz puts on his uniform for the first time at the air force base in Radom last week. For Poland, moving to a professional army is just one step among many that the country is taking in the process to revamp its military forces from a 450,000-man force to a lean, well-equipped military that can quickly deploy to the world's trouble spots as part of multinational missions.
