TAD is overpriced Gucci line of "tactical" clothing. They make quality stuff, but you can get more bang for your buck. I recommend sticking to known brands like NorthFace, Columbia, REI, Alpha Industries.

TAD blows those brands out of water. Have to pay for good stuff.

You could always waterproof it yourself if you are any good with a needle.

I trashed out a pair of 5.11 boots and a ($75!!!!!) pair of their gloves in less than 6 weeks in A'stan. I'll never trust their kit on ops again. You want waterproof? Look into an Arcteryx Alpha. It's worth the $.

I wanted the Arcteryx Alpha LEAF version, but they jacked up their prices pretty high even with the discount.

FYI avoid Beyond Clothing. Biggest waste of my money ever.

Why tactical jacket when you are in civi?

Why not just a standard North Face jacket ...........still strong ripstop nylon and zip out liner? I don't understand the fascination with "tactical" this and "tactical" that. Heck, I have found Nylon tap to be pretty tactical, but I don't walk around with a ducktape jacket on.

why on earth would you take 5.11 boots and gloves over there? That rock will shredd anything 5.11. More suited to urban (INACTIVE) police.

Fjällräven makes tactical stuff? Didn't know that. My sister has a winter jacket from them, but I doubt that thing would be useful in Afghanistan

Do you own, or have you worn, any TAD Gear stuff? It's spendy because it's that nice and it's cheaper cost wise than North Face, Arcteryx, Marmot, etc while being as good or better quality. I have a TAD Gear Ranger Hoodie and it's the bomb. I also own one of their softshells and it was $50 cheaper than a comparable North Face item.

Columbia gear is pretty but cheap and will get shredded. REI is cheap and will work but even their store brand prices are creeping up. North Face is for sponsored climbers and rich snow bunnies in Aspen . To each his own.

TNF is not as high end as you think they are. Their quality has dropped since they became really really mainstream. I like Arcteryx.

FWIW, Arc'teryx is also going overseas, along with basically every company ever, except small joints like TAD. I have a bunch of Arc'teryx stuff (got it on discount, otherwise f*** that!), all thankfully Canadian-made. They do not lower the price if they start making one product overseas.

Anywho.

Want waterproof? Go to REI like a few people said, and pick up a hard shell. Sierra Designs makes some inexpensive stuff that works damn good. I have the older, cheaper version of this Hurricane shell: http://sierradesigns.com/mens.display.php?id=1014

Works. Not tacticool or anything.

Also, FWIW, lots of things billed as "waterproof" or "water resistant" that AREN'T plastic based need treatment, typically after a handful of uses.
