Thanks Wilhelm, I am interested in any details that could be supplied.

In addition I am also curious about the Casspir truck Hispano MkV 20 mm gun mounting. I will build a Casspir kit too and any picture of such Casspir and 20mm gun (!!! What a powerful gun for a truck !!!) would be appreciated.

Regards,

Richard

Kero, I'll have to visit my friend who knew Rfn Thom well. I'll ask if he knows anything further.

As to that 20mm gun mounted on the Casspir, I believe it was Koevoet who mounted that gun in the picture. AFAIK, that was a Hispano 20mm cannon that was taken out of an old Vampire jet fighter when it was retired.

The Casspir's weapon station on the vehicle top just behind the front seats have seen many weapon systems mounted there over the years. 20mm cannon, 14,5mm and 12,7mm, most of which were field modifications. More official were single or twin Browning or FN 7,62mm machine guns in a factory mount/shield.

This is off the top of my head. I'll check the details later.
True. The callsign was 21C. Interesting to note that the A Coy Ratel shot out was callsign 12C.

Funny that these questions are asked at this time - the period that they were killed in.

Default Border Duty

Does anyone know who the first infantry unit was to take over border duties from the police and when?

There you are - the beret badge is without the scroll at bottom.

Cloth when on beret.
Same colour.
Now one beret and badge for all infantry. No more unit badges, and no "balkies".
Also note that the colour of the rank insignia has changed recently.

Check out https://www.warstore.co.za/
Look under > Southern African Wars > Rhodesia

You could also try http://www.aleckaplan.co.za/Medals-B.../View-category
They regularly auction old Rhodesian kit

I've bought from both and have never had any issues in my dealings with them. You're going to pay collector prices though.
