Another great slide show by the NYtimes:

Quote:
Lightly equipped, marginally trained and undermined by corruption and poor discipline, Afghanistan's police force remains weak, even though its work is daunting. In the Nawa district of Ghazni Province, near the border with Pakistan, the front yard of a police station was littered with scrapped vehicles and broken artillery pieces in early December.

Quote:
Shair Mohammad, 30, center, had been the acting police chief in the Nawa district until this month. He had jurisdiction over hundreds of square miles near Pakistan that the Taliban had used as a sanctuary since losing Kabul, the Afghan capital, in 2001. But his ability to police his beat was severely compromised.

Quote:
A supply closet of loose ordnance. Among the problems Mr. Mohammad faced were a lack of ammunition, no money for food and not enough clothing or gear to operate in cold weather.
Photo: Tyler Hicks/The New York Times

Quote:
The possibility of mutiny concerned Mr. Mohammad, right. No one under his command had been paid since April. "My commanders always just give me promises," he said. "They never send the money."
Photo: Tyler Hicks/The New York Times

Quote:
In the last two years, the insurgency has blossomed, making control of many provinces a contest. The Afghan army, under American tutelage, has made considerable progress, American officers say. The police lag far behind.
Photo: Tyler Hicks/The New York Times

Quote:
Several enlisted soldiers nicknamed Mr. Mohammad, left, "Charles Manson," to whom he bears a slight resemblance. The soldiers said he was a character of his own: he managed a gentle and wry demeanor, but never declined to accompany them on patrols and was courageous under fire.
Photo: Tyler Hicks/The New York Times

Quote:
But Mr. Mohammad lacked some fundamental leadership traits. His successor inherited a station that was a picture of disorder and filth.
Photo: Tyler Hicks/The New York Times

Quote:
Afghan police patrolled a village outside of Nawa district. Mr. Mohammad's district had long been a transit corridor for insurgents between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and had felt almost no government presence. Since 2006 the area had been covered only by Mr. Mohammad's detachment and a single American platoon.
Photo: Tyler Hicks/The New York Times

Quote:
As his tour ended in mid-December, Mr. Mohammad, left, spent his last evenings sipping tea, crouched by a hissing space heater in a mud-walled fort.

The WW-II vintage guns behind the UAZ's should be museum pieces: 57mm ZiS-2 (left) and 76,2mm ZiS-3 (right).
