It has some great diary entries, letters, etc... from soldiers and civilians during WWI. As a warning though, some are quite graphic, like one guy writing about how he barely survived getting impaled by a german's bayonet when jumping into a trench. Also has some stuff from the Russian Revolution in there. |

This. Also, all of Lyn MacDonald's books about WWI; Alistair Horne's Price of Glory; John Toland's No Man's Land 1918; for the American experience, a fantastic overarching account can be read in The Last Days of Innocence by Meirion and Susan Herries, Henry Berry's Make the Kaiser Dance, Laurence Stalling's The Doughboys, Robert Asprey's At Belleau Wood, and Elton Mackin's Suddenly We Didn't Want to Die.
If you have more specific interests or needs, let me know. I have an extensive library about WWI (what I mentioned above is about 10%) and know quite a bit about that conflict. To answer your original question, yes. In Early August 1914, the war was very popular, and everyone thought they'd kick someone's ass and have the boys home for Christmas. I'd say that was the general feeling. Lyn MacDonald's 1914: The Days of Hope and Barbara Tuchman's book cover this period well. |

Ok, then I think http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of_World_War_I
would be a good place to start. Read it and get an idea of the angle you wish to focus on. Then read one of the books in quotation or one of the books that are recommended here. My guess is the ones recommended here are more interesting and is more likely to impress your teacher How many pages is your paper supposed to be? It's been a long time since videregående, so I'm kinda jealous that you get to write a paper on one of my favorite subjects. I never got to do that |

One could say everybody wanted victory. No one expected 4 years of slaughter. For them it was a question of over by Christmas. I doubt they would have wanted the war they got had they known what it would be like. I think the situation for the French was interesting. They lost a part of their territory to the Germans in 1871. Having lost, and feeling a need to regain their honor and territory could be a powerful motivator. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franco-Prussian_War Good luck, and if you need more help try to ask specific questions. |
