Default Ex-KGB spy gunned down in Moscow

Quote:

A Russian businessman who was convicted in Israel as a KGB spy has been shot dead in Moscow, police say.
Investigators said Shabattai Kalmanovich, 60, was killed by gunmen who fired at his Mercedes from a passing car, Russian media reported.
His driver was seriously wounded in the attack but tried to chase the killers, reports said.
Mr Kalmanovich was well known in Russia as a music concert promoter and as a basketball sponsor.
His killing appeared to have been "carefully planned", a police official was quoted by ITAR-Tass news agency as saying.
In televised remarks, Moscow Investigative Committee chief Anatoly Bagmet said the killing could have been related to Mr Kalmanovich's business affairs or have been driven by "personal revenge".
Jailed for spying
Mr Kalmanovich emigrated from the former Soviet Union to Israel in 1971 and in 1988 was jailed for spying for the KGB, media reports said.
He was released after serving five years and relocated to Sierra Leone, where he made a fortune in the diamonds trade.
He later returned to Russia where he ran a large shopping centre in Moscow and promoted concerts for stars including Michael Jackson and Liza Minnelli.
Mr Kalmanovich also sponsored basketball clubs and in 2008 became general manager of the Russian women's basketball team.

My totally random speculation on why he was killed: He was really a double spy, still working for Israel, and the FSB found out about it. They therefore arranged to have him bumped off and blame it on the mafia.

Plausible? I don't know. But it would certainly makes for an interesting novel or movie.

certainly, it can be a good movie "based on real events".

I congratulate you for your imagination power.
Stick to using it only in fictional matters though.
For the murdered ex-spy? He has had a better life than most of us ever will dream, so good riddance and enjoy the other side.

I'll take that in the spirit in which it was offered, as a compliment. Thank you.

I like your realistic view on life. Some may call it bleak, but I think you are spot on!

Nope. He uncovered the formula for cold fusion and was assassinated by ninjas working for the NWO so that they could continue perpetuating violence in the middle east to facilitate the return of their reptilian overlords.

There is no such thing as "ex-KGB".

I know a guy who went to Sierra Leone quite a few years ago as a military attache. As far as I know, he's still there in a private capacity. Diamonds are forever I suppose.

Slain ex-KGB spy's driver in grave condition

MOSCOW, November 3 (RIA Novosti) - The driver employed by Russian-Israeli businessman Shabtai von Kalmanovich, who was shot dead in central Moscow on Monday, is in a grave condition, a hospital source said on Tuesday.
Unidentified assailants armed with a 9mm automatic and a pump-action shotgun opened fire at fifty-nine-year-old Kalmanovich as he sat in his black Mercedes S500 on Moscow's Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment at about 4:50 p.m. Moscow time (1:50 GMT). He died instantly.
His driver, who initially tried to give chase, was forced to pull over outside the capital's 16th century Novodevichy Convent due to serious injuries. He was later taken to a Moscow clinic where he underwent surgery.
"Pyotr Tumanov is in intensive care after surgery - his condition can be assessed as grave," the hospital source said, adding that security had been tightened in Tumanov's ward.
Russian prosecutors said earlier in the day that the driver was stable after surgery.
Investigators have said the attack bears all the hallmarks of a contract killing. They have also not ruled out that the murder was linked to Kalmanovich's business activities.
Born in 1949 in Soviet Lithuania, Kalmanovich left the U.S.S.R. with his family for Israel in 1972, where he graduated from Jerusalem University. In 1988, he was sentenced to nine years in jail for spying for the Soviet Union, but released in 1993. He then left Israel and returned to Moscow, quickly finding his way in the chaotic dawn of post-Soviet capitalism

He he, he was a friend of Yaponchik(so called godfather of "russian" mafia), who also was gunned in this summer.

So his backgroung being a ex-KGB agent has nothing to do with his death.
