Default Anyone here do legal type things? Westlaw?

Hey you! Is anyone familiar with Westlaw? I need to look up some information, but it seems to be evading me pretty good. I have searched through every "common sense" option, and yet I cannot find the statute that defines Marriage in Minnesota. It's for an Extra credit type assignment. I see tons of crap under marriage but no legal definition.

I would appreciate your help.
Also... it wouldn't matter if I live in Another state but look at Minnesota would it? Cuz it's a school computer.

Thanks

BTW. This is westlaw

How to find it via Westlaw only, or the actual statute?

https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=517.01

517.01 MARRIAGE A CIVIL CONTRACT.

Marriage, so far as its validity in law is concerned, is a civil contract between a man and a woman, to which the consent of the parties, capable in law of contracting, is essential. Lawful marriage may be contracted only between persons of the opposite sex and only when a license has been obtained as provided by law and when the marriage is contracted in the presence of two witnesses and solemnized by one authorized, or whom one or both of the parties in good faith believe to be authorized, so to do. Marriages subsequent to April 26, 1941, not so contracted shall be null and void.

I don't know much about Minn laws, helps?

Not walking to the library to look it up doesn't equal not doing it on your own. The net is a tool, why not use it? In fact, you'd be an idiot not to.

Strange official definition when you take into account that it repeats itself ("man and woman" then "persons of the opposite sex"). Minnesota needs better laws.

In future, when you search by common sense, try putting exact definitions of the statute unless you are looking for a specific case law. Moreover case laws would contain a link to a specific statute you are looking for.

With regards to out of state searching, it all depends on what the subscription contract between your school and Thompson-West( WESTLAW). Usually universities get full package meaning you can do research for federal and multi-state case laws, statutes etc.

See if this works. I tried to upload the pdf.

There's a whole bunch of other stuff that's related to it. In westlaw, go to "Directory." Under "US State Materials" click on "statutes," then on indexes for individual states.

Under Minnesota general index do a search querry for marriage & marry and you'll get a bunch of hits.

I'm still trying to learn westlaw myself. it can be a pain in the ass sometimes.
