Adidas hits err Jordan

Boots kid's team over Nikes

Adidas ended its $3 million endorsement contract with the University of Central Florida's athletic department after one of Michael Jordan's sons played a game for the school wearing Nike shoes named after his father.

Marcus Jordan, a freshman guard at UCF, told the university he would wear only Nike Air Jordan shoes out of deference to his superstar dad.

Every player on the team except the 18-year-old Jordan wore Adidas shoes in the Knights' 84-65 victory over St. Leo University in an exhibition game last night.

"We are disappointed to learn that Adidas has chosen to discontinue its relationship with UCF Athletics," school spokesman Leigh Torbin said. "Once we receive official notice, we will be able to further respond."

There was no immediate word on how the school would offset the loss.

Adidas spokeswoman Andrea Corso told the Orlando Sentinel that the school failed to live up to its side of the deal.

"The University of Central Florida has chosen not to deliver on their contractual commitment to Adidas," Corso said.

"As a result, we have chosen not to continue our relationship with them moving forward."

Corso didn't immediately respond to an e-mail request for a copy of the statement. Messages left with spokesmen for the Jordans weren't immediately returned.

The school was operating under a tentative contract with Adidas that ran through 2015 and was valued at $3 million, the Sentinel said. Adidas, the world's second-largest sporting-goods maker, provided the Knights' sports teams with shoes, apparel and equipment. The school earlier said it had been working to extend its contract with the Germany-based company for more than a year.

Steve Rosner, co-founder of 16W Marketing LLC in East Rutherford, NJ, said the case sets a bad precedent, putting one player over the entire program.

"What if the No. 1 [high school] kid is offered a scholarship to play at Duke, which is a Nike school, and he says, I'll come to your school, but I won't wear your shoes?" Rosner said in an interview. "I would imagine they wouldn't offer him a scholarship. Who's in charge here?"

UCF reached an agreement with Adidas' regional representatives to let Marcus Jordan wear Nikes before higher-level corporate officials objected, the Sentinel reported.

"It is important to state that UCF Athletics did make Adidas aware of Marcus' recruitment and was led to believe that there would be a workable solution to a unique situation," the school said in a statement Oct. 23 when the matter first came to light.

Rosner said the school isn't sending the proper message.

"There is no one individual bigger than the team," he said.

well the whole companies are about shoes and they are kind of arch-rivals

Jordan senior covered the Reebok logo on his jersey with an American flag during the 92 olympics because he did not want to promote a rival company to Nike - today Reebok is part of Adidas.... so they kind of have a history

Do we really care about sponsorship,

what about the game?

Once corporate finance was introduced into sport

the game, went out the window and became a business.

More like all over money. Even at the college level a lot of athletes are positioning themselves for the (in theory) big payday they have coming in the future. It's not about heritage or sport, it's about money.

The kid has a pretty much guaranteed Nike contract if he makes it out and he would hear lots o' crap from people about having not worn a Nike if he does something spectacular in a game.

The problem is little Jordan, Mike should have made the call to his sot to nut up and wear Adidas. The UCF now loses money, because little Jordan was acting like a four year old.

I quit watching pro basketball when they had a dunking contest a player stopped, pumped his new pump sneakers a few times to make sure and draw attention to them, then went on to dunk. It was at that point I gave up. The three point shot and teamwork are long since dead.

I was a young teenager in junior high school when it first dawned on me that pro basketball was nothing more than big business.
It was when Magic Johnson was signed to a $25 million long-term contract, and the following day, demanded to be traded, because he couldn't get along with the coach, Paul Westhead.
So what did they do? They fired the coach, to pacify the spoiled, immature player.

One little spoilt bitch goes and destroys an entire team - I hope thats a vital lesson to all who might look at signing the spoilt little bastard.

Who the hell would want to sponsor them if they won't throw the **** out the team for not complying with the sponsorship deal? I think ADIDAS are 100% in the right.
