Muskö - underground navalbase

Muskö is probably the largest underground military facility in Sweden. It´s a navalbase mainly built under a mountain of rocksolid granite. Offcourse impossible to destroy with any kind of bunkerbuster or nuclearweapon.

It´s huge and they use ordinary buses to transport the people underground. Used to be top secret but after the collaps the of Sovietunionen the secrecy is a little bit looser and more and more is revealed of this underground community, and some pictures!

Well...
Dock 1 and Dock 2 is 145m long, about 40m in height.
Both of them attached to a 250 meter long tunnel.
Dock 3 is 150 meter and mainly used for subs.

The docks can be split up to accommodate several ships. There's also seaports to totally close the base from external elements.

4th is 'Risdalsslipen' a 350 meter tunnel/work area where you can pull in, lift ships and other things.

And then there's a crapload of other tunnels...

heh there's tonnes of underground installations in Sweden (not really in use), such as oil depos, nuke-safe infantry and artillery installations, airbase... not to mention the enourmous underground network to protect the capital Stockholm. But this one is a bit special indeed and still do important work even if politicians don't think so

there's a James Bond movie directly inspired by this base.. but I forget the name of it hmmm...

edit: found 2 more sub pics... last one is from the 50s and show 3 subs in one dock.

Very nice pictures! I especially liked the ones of the machine hall, looks like a small factory (and it is I assume it is so they can make spare parts).

If someone passes by Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast sometime you should visit Göteborgs Maritima Centrum which is the worlds largest floating ship museum (according to some links, although I doubt that considering that the Yanks have whole aircraft carriers floating as museums), and it has as the crown of their exhibition the ship which is a model in the link, HMS Småland, a destroyer of the Halland-class.

Muskö is a island that is connected to the mainland via a tunnel under the seabed. Bridges are easy to knock out in war. (the tunnel starts where the yellow road ends, bottom left of picture. The dark blue is the naval harbour) In peacetime 800 people works here.

In this pic. I believe you can see one, perhaps two, tunnels and the harbour at upper right.

A swedish airforce ELINT DC-3 that got shot down by Soviet MiG-15´s in the 50´s over the Baltic Sea, all onboard died. They even shot down the Catalina rescueplane that was sent out to search for survivors. The DC-3 was salvaged a few years ago and the wreck taken to Muskö for investigation.
